MiamiHerald speaks out against "Real ID"

A little late, but better than never.
It really chafes me that one of the main reasons I voted for Bush was that Gore was slamming the premise of a National ID and that scared the hell out of me and my vision for future liberties.

Then Bush goes ahead and puts one through anyway.  Someone remind me what the point was of voting?

Under Real ID, states must convert all driver’s licenses by May 2008 to fraud-proof ”personal identification cards” that, in effect, are a national ID. Applicants must show a birth certificate, Social Security card, photo ID, proof of residence and legal status, all of which must be verified with the issuing agency. The personal data will go into a national database for government use and will be stored on the license itself. So when you hand over your license to verify your identity, your personal information could be vulnerable to theft.
